Frames that flatter your face shape
The guiding principle is contrast: frames that oppose your face's dominant lines create balance, while frames that echo them tend to disappear. Treat it as a starting point rather than a rulebook. Plenty of people look wonderful in the frame they were told to avoid.
Soft curves and similar width and length. Angular, rectangular or square frames introduce definition and lend the face length. Sharp corners and a strong brow line work in your favour; avoid small round frames, which echo the curve rather than counter it.
A strong jaw and broad forehead. Round and oval frames soften the angles, and thinner or rimless styles keep the look light. Steer clear of boxy, heavy frames that repeat the lines already present.
Balanced proportions, which means almost everything works. Aim for a frame at least as wide as the broadest part of your face, and treat this as licence to choose on style alone, bold colour, distinctive shapes, whatever appeals.
Wider at the forehead, tapering to a narrower chin. Frames that are lighter on top and wider at the bottom restore balance, rimless, bottom-heavy or gently rounded styles. Avoid heavy top bars and dramatic cat-eyes, which add weight where there's already plenty.
Narrow forehead and jaw with prominent cheekbones. Cat-eye shapes, oval frames and styles with detailing along the brow line draw attention upward and flatter the cheekbones without widening them.
Longer than it is wide. Deeper frames with a substantial vertical dimension break up the length, and decorative or contrasting temples add welcome width. Short, shallow frames tend to elongate the face further.
